This year’s Angkor Empire Marathon expects to attract 5,000 participants, while Cambodians registering the most to run 42k

The 42km race in the 2025 Angkor Empire International Marathon has attracted around 500 to 600 Cambodian runners, more than any other nationality, while there are only around 200 foreigners. This was reported by H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia. 

H.E. Vath Chamroeun emphasized that the large number of Cambodian runners in the full marathon race demonstrates the good heart health of the people as well as the growing passion in long-distance running.

The 2025 Angkor Empire International Marathon, also in its 10th year, will be held on August 3 in Siem Reap province.

The number of registered participants is around 3,000, and the organizing commission expects it to reach 4,000 to 5,000 runners after 2,800 participants took part in 2024. The Chinese people are the leading foreign runners, followed by the Japanese, Malaysians, Chinese Taipei and the United Kingdom.

Related to the large number of Chinese participants, H.E. Vath Chamroeun stated that, due to the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Cambodia Marathon Organizing Commission and Yunnan Province, it was possible to facilitate their participation. Meanwhile, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China will also be present on the official day of the race. His Excellency hopes that in the coming years, at least 5,000 Chinese runners will be able to participate.

The main purpose of organizing of the Angkor Empire International Marathon is to help boost tourism during the rainy season or Green Season, which is not crowded with tourists. Therefore, the organizing commission hopes that if it will receives 4,000 to 5,000 participants as expected, it will greatly help tourism in Siem Reap province. In addition, the event also helps as a charity activity to help hospitals.

 

Mr. Sem Phalla, Chairman of the Organizing Commission of the Cambodia Marathon, also called for more registration and promotion for this international event, as it will be monitored by the International Marathon Committee, of which Cambodia is one of the 112 member countries.
