Joseph Schooling, Singapore's lone swimmer who won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, announced his retirement on Tuesday at the age of 28.
Joseph announced his retirement on his official social media page, noting that he is no longer a professional swimmer. He said that he does not regret his decision and is excited about the next chapter of his life.
Joseph astonished the world by overcoming American top swimmer Michael Phelps to win the gold medal in the men's swimming event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
However, he was unable to retain his title because he only won a bronze medal in the world swimming competition in 2017 and failed to defend his gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
He got engaged in the forbidden substances scandal in 2022, and he was barred from competing in the Singaporean swimming team's 19th Asian Games in China in 2023 owing to declining performance.
Joseph retired with tremendous accomplishments, including one gold medal from the Olympic Games, three gold medals from the Asian Games, and 29 medals from the Southeast Asian Games.
